Guzmania - Flowering Bromeliad

Guzmania are native to the tropics of South America, where they grow as epiphytes, attached to trees rather than in the soil. Keep the “reservoir” of water between the leaves topped up with water, and water the roots sparingly, giving them time to dry out and breathe. 

Bromeliads are monocarpic, meaning that they flower only once in their lifetime. Flowers are very long-lasting on these plants, but once they’ve finished, the main plant will begin to die back over a period of months. Bromeliads will produce smaller baby plants around the base of the stem, which can be separated and grown on to produce more flowers!
